La dott. Giovanna Romano, medico veterinario diplomato ECAR a Torino, coordina la parte tecnico-veterinaria con particolare attenzione alle problematiche riproduttive e dell’allevamento equino. Si occupa di allevamento equino del cavallo da corsa come veterinario residente insieme ai colleghi e colleghe. Segue tutte le fasi dello sviluppo dei puledri, dalla nascita ai 18 mesi. Nel 1998 fonda il “centro equino arcadia” dedicato alla gestione delle gravidanze a rischio e alla terapia intensiva neonatale e negli anni sviluppa molteplici servizi di avanguardia ed eccellenza per risolvere i problemi della riproduzione e dell’allevamento di futuri grandi atleti del mondo equino.

 

FORMAZIONE INTERNAZIONALE

Ha conseguito a Vienna nel 2002, fra i primi in Europa, il diploma al College Europeo di Riproduzione Animale, nella sub-specialità equina. Si è laureata nell’89 in medicina veterinaria presso l’Università di Torino con una tesi sull’uso dell’ecografia nella fattrice. Dall’88 al ’90 è stata assistente in Irlanda, presso l’allevamento Rathbarry Stud. di cavalli purosangue.

 

ESPERIENZA SUL CAMPO

Oltre 10.000 fattrici di tutte le razze seguite in carriera, inseminate con seme fresco o congelato. Decine di stalloni gestiti attraverso il prelievo di seme e la monta naturale. Oltre 100.000 dosi di seme congelato prodotto nel nostro centro. Oltre 5000 parti assistiti dal nostro staff. Questi e altri servizi con ottimi risultati hanno fatto di noi un riferimento per allevatori di eccellenza.

“Credo che trasmettere agli allevatori e agli appassionati la conoscenza sulla materia riproduttiva sia la base per un buon lavoro di squadra.”

Il centro è convenzionato con varie Facoltà italiane e estere per il tirocinio dei laureandi e riceve laureati per una full immersion ogni stagione riproduttiva. Ogni anno il Centro organizza corsi aperti a tutti sull’assistenza al parto a inizio stagione. Giovanna Romano è relatrice da anni ai Congressi della società italiana dei veterinari per equini (SIVE) e Società Italiana di Riproduzione Equina (SIRE) sulle materie di sua competenza.

 

Academic Qualifications: 

Graduated from the Veterinary School of Turin University with a Degree Thesis on “Diagnostic Ultrasonography on the Reproductive Tract of the Mare” in July 1989.  November 1989, admission to National Board of Veterinarian  REG.NO.To1157.

November 2002,Vienna, ECAR Diploma (European College of Animal Reproduction, Equine sub-speciality) January 2005: Member of ECAR Credential Committee.

Our centre is accredited as “ECAR training center” and can support the training for Ecar residents.

February 2011: member the EAEVE list of experts. EAEVE is a European Association in charge of quality evaluation of accredited veterinary faculties according to high standards.

 

Professional Activity

Equine Practice with specific interest in Reproduction and Neonatology.

Student externship in equine reproduction April March 1988 in Rathbarry stud, Fermoy, Co. Cork, Ireland (thoroughbreds).

1989 – Full breeding season Internship at Rathbarry Stud.

The veterinary staff is in charge of managing mares for natural breeding and perinatal and neonatal care (about 300 foalings /season) 600 coverings/season.

1990-full breeding season employed at the Rathbarry stud as resident vet.450 mares covered in the national hunt stallion section.

1991-1999.  In full charge as Head Veterinarian in the Standardbred farm: Allevamento leFontanette, Turin, Italy. The farm operates on artificial insemination and cooled semen shipping. Peak achievement 550 mares inseminated. The large numbers of horses requires disease prevention measures, a well-equipped laboratory and an in-house unit for medical (neonatal) emergencies.

1994-Semen Cryopreservation Unit operating(INRA method)- More then 1400 ejaculates from different stallions are frozen. The frozen semen is shipped and/or inseminated in multiple insemination centres in Italy, Germany, Sweden and Finland and United States. In the same centre about 100 mares/season are bred artificially with frozen semen, with over 85% pregnancies over an average of two cycles.

1999-foundation of Centro Equino Arcadia, a referral centre for equine reproductive and neonatal problems. Arcadiadeals with high-risk pregnancies, induced parturition, intensive care of foals, artificial insemination with frozen semen, embryo-transfer, infertility problems etc. with particular emphasis on the use of ultrasound. It has a new, fully- equipped laboratory and stallion unit to operate in the field of semen cryopreservation and high-tech reproductive technologies.

November 2000 to 2004: affiliated to Select Breeders Europe (quality control system).

Foaling induction with low dose oxytocin protocol (published)

Embryo-Transfer facilities.

2010 Intenship/course in Fernando Riera “dona Pilar” Embryo Transfer Center.

Semen collection, shipping, freezing and banking and import export.

2010 to date- The farm and Reproductive Services at Cetnro Equino arcadia srl are on my own property.

Natural Breeding Thoroughbred station and management of internationally recognised thoroughbred stallions (Red Rocks-Sakhee’s Secret-Frozen Power-Luck of the Kitten).

Semen production centre (cooled and frozen) has full authorization for international exchanges of  shipped cooled and frozen semen. ID IT52EQ
