Orphan Foal and foster mares
Here at Arcadia, we share the touching story of an orphaned foal we took in and raised alongside a surrogate mare, becoming part of our “Orphan and Wet Nurse” service. Welcome to Arcadia.
In this video, we share the story of Jasmine, an orphaned foal that arrived here at Arcadia. We took care of her, prepared a wet nurse for her, and raised her alongside other foals, in a herd, with a mother that ensures she grows up healthy.
An orphan foal that loses its dam after birth can find the following at Arcadia:
- Efficient 24/7 management of its nutrition.
- A wet nurse, a foster mare that will accept and raise the foal just like other foals.
- The necessary attention to prevent neonatal diseases and possible immune issues.
The foal will grow just like the others, without missing key developmental stages, fed with artificial milk by our staff, with the frequent feedings it needs (initially every 20 minutes, day and night).
It will be raised by a “wet nurse.” The foster mare will recognize and fully accept the foal as her own, thanks to the specialized veterinary treatment she receives at Arcadia. This way, the foal will learn how to interact with other foals and socialize in the herd.
